My research is about evidential reasoning in criminal trials (see project page). A judge or juror thinks in scenarios, while DNA-tests and fingerprint matches are reported with probabilities. We aim to integrate the narrative approach of scenarios with the probabilistic technique of Bayesian networks.

Science writing

I am a writer for As a member of sciencepalooza I wrote regular columns for De Groene Amsterdammer and De Volkskrant. In the past I have written for Het Parool, Kennislink and Scientific American (Dutch edition).

About me

I am a PhD-candidate at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Engineering (ALICE). I could not choose between doing research and writing about it, so I try to divide my time between both. I have a background in science communication, mathematics and mathematical logic.
